Some sad breaking news is circulating around the Godzilla/tokusatsu community that beloved Toho actor, Tadao Takashima passed away yesterday on the 26th at age 88 from natural causes. Known to fans as Osamu in King Kong vs Godzilla, Susumu the photographer in Atragon, Dr Kawaji in Frankenstein vs Baragon and Professor Kusumi in Son of Godzilla, he was also jazz drummer in school, which came in handy for his role in King Kong vs Godzilla. He also was in musicals and hosted some tv game programs. His two sons followed in his footsteps in acting and were both in kaiju films – Masanobu, in his first acting role, was Major Kuroki in Godzilla vs. Biollante while Masahiro was Prince Yamato Takeru in Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon, and starred in Gunhed, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (also starring with his father.) Tadao Takashima also was in Toho’s 1962 adaptation of Chushingura (The 47 Ronin),
and did some recorded work with his wife, Hanayo Sumi. DKU-TV is sadden by his death and will be showing his work in the genre during our G-Fest marathon next month.
